Work Experience

My work experience story by Ben Harrison

My Story

I originally came to Encore Re-use in early 2009 to complete 3 month’s of volunteering in order to achieve The Duke Of Edinburgh Bronze Award. When I arrived on my first day I was generally surprised as there were volunteers roughly the same age as me, who I could talk and relate to about various subjects such as music and films etc. I received a warm welcome from everyone and had a great time. The activities and jobs included various things ranging from delivering and collecting household items to updating the website and making cups of tea, at one point we even got a round of table tennis! I never got bored as each job offered something new and helped me to develop new skills relevant to later life. I enjoyed the experience and decided to continue volunteering after I completed my Duke Of Edinburgh Bronze Award until it became not possible when I got a job.

For my work experience in June 2010 I decided to return to Encore Re-use for a week. I met the rest of the workforce and improved my skills further also learning new ones such as how to use the tailgate on the van, what the most effective way is to dismantle old tables, cupboards, drawers etc. My communication skills have improved as at the end of each day I sat down with the other workers and volunteers and conversed and had a laugh about certain topics. I hope that more opportunities like this become available in the future and I hope that they are as enjoyable as this one has been.
